New Paltz Creditor Negotiation as Debt Relief Option
If you have overwhelming debt, you may get daily, or hourly, calls from a creditor. There are laws against creditor harassment, but as a practical matter they can be hard to enforce. There are two primary ways to stop creditor harassment:
- File for bankruptcy
- Negotiate with the creditors
My name is D. Roger Glenn, and I am the co-founder of the New Paltz law firm of Glenn & Glenn, L.L.P. I am a bankruptcy attorney with more than 30 years of experience helping individuals and small businesses with financial and legal matters including bankruptcy.

Options for Non-dischargeable Debts
Whether you file a personal bankruptcy under Chapter 7 or Chapter 13, or a business bankruptcy under Chapter 11, there are still debts that are not able to be eliminated completely. Those debts include:
- Federal or State Taxes
- Parking tickets or other fines/fees owed to the government
- Past due child support or spousal support (alimony)
- Student loans
Even though there are non-dischargeable debts, there are instances in which an experienced bankruptcy attorney can help. Alternatives include:
- Negotiating with the IRS for reduced penalties, fines and interest
- Negotiating a payment plan with municipalities and the state for past dues, fees or fines
- Negotiating a lower child support or spousal support rate through a divorce modification
- Negotiating an alternative payment plan with a school's lending institution
If you have the income, I can often negotiate a reduced payment plan or other repayment option as an alternative to bankruptcy. When there is overwhelming debt from multiple sources, a bankruptcy may still be your best option.
The best place to start is by completing the Glenn & Glenn, L.L.P., bankruptcy questionnaire, and scheduling an appointment to discuss your situation.
